 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation; [se’lena kinta’nija ‘peres] April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995), was an American Tejano singer. Her contribution to fashion and music have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most prominent performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in the year 2020, in their "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", which was based on Latin songs and Latin albums. Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" due to her attire choices. She also is among the most popular Latin artists of all time , and is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest member of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the scene of music as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was regularly dismissed and had to be denied bookings by venues across Texas for singing Tejano music, which is a male-dominated genre. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, and she was awarded nine times consecutively. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. The self-titled debut album released in the year following. Her brother was her primary music producer as well as the songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) reached the top spot at one in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. It was described by music critics as being the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her most adored hit song. Live! (1993) was nominated for the Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It was one of America's top Latin albums. In the eyes of critics, it was responsible as the catalyst for Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
